Arrival in Provincetown

[Arriving in Provincetown, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, June 12th]  In fact, the moment we were cleared, we were boarded from both sides.  There were press, radio and newsreel men and a host of men and women reporters.  Mr. Horace Hallett, the chairman of the Provincetown Reception Committee, shook my hand and went up onto the quarter-deck.  Harry Kemp, the eighty-two-year-old poet of the sand dunes, the one who had threatened to organize a boarding party if we failed to stop at Provincetown, looking frail and white in his black Pilgrim costume, was assisted up the companionway.  I caught sight of Nancy Villiers, embracing her husband and surrounded by news and cameramen.

Mr. Hallett presented a handsome bronze plaque commemorative medallion to each of us.  Then we re-enacted the signing of the Mayflower Compact.  I got a moment to speak to Alan and he told me that we would remain at Provincetown until early the following morning, as we missed the afternoon tide.  Fresh vegetables, fruit, milk, water and bread came aboard, and we were invited to use the showers on the Yankton, which was tied up on our starboard side.
